Sancheong County Minimizes Rice Planthopper Damage with Emergency Control Measures
First in the Nation to Allocate Reserve Funds
Over 80% of Rice Water Weevil Exterminated
Sancheong County in Gyeongnam announced on the 8th that it achieved a result of exterminating more than 80% of rice planthoppers through emergency control measures in response to their spread.
Previously, Sancheong County had conducted regular on-site inspections to prevent the spread of rice planthoppers in rice cultivation areas. About a week before the Chuseok holiday, they observed an increase in rice planthopper populations and determined that urgent control was needed in some areas.
Accordingly, for the first time in the country, the county allocated reserve funds of 360 million won and carried out emergency joint control measures over 3,000 hectares using unmanned helicopters and drone pest control equipment.
As a result, more than 80% of rice planthoppers were exterminated, significantly slowing their spread and minimizing damage to local farmers.
Park Jongwon, president of the Sancheong County Rice Farmers Association, stated, "Thanks to the county's prompt response, we were able to carry out emergency control measures, which has been a great help for a bountiful harvest."
