Completion of Nowon-gu 'Madeul Nongyo Transmission Center'
Seoul's Only Nongyo 'Madeul Nongyo' Establishes New Transmission Center for Traditional Culture
Renovated into a Larger, More Comfortable Space with Two Practice Rooms, Office, Kitchen, and Restrooms
Completion Ceremony Held on October 7th... Rice Harvesting Event Also Conducted to Commemorate Completion
Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it has newly established the 'Madeul Nongyo Transmission Center' to preserve and pass down Seoul's intangible cultural heritage, 'Madeul Nongyo.'
'Madeul Nongyo' is a farmers' song sung to boost the spirits of farmers while working on farming tasks such as rice planting and weeding in the Madeul Plain area around Sanggye-dong. It is the only remaining farmers' song in Seoul and a valuable cultural heritage, designated as an intangible cultural heritage of Seoul on December 7, 1999. Currently, its legacy is maintained through the Madeul Nongyo Preservation Society (President Kim Wan-su, with about 50 members).
The district promoted the project to establish a new transmission center to preserve and foster Madeul Nongyo due to the aging condition of the existing center. Since the installation of the transmission center in 2017, there had been ongoing inconveniences due to limited space, and difficulties in managing farming tools displayed outdoors.
To resolve these issues, the transmission center construction project was carried out from January to August this year, completing overall facility improvements.
The transmission center has a total floor area of 114.88㎡ and includes two practice rooms, an office, a kitchen, and restrooms, enabling the Madeul Nongyo Preservation Society to conduct practice and education in a better environment.
The district will hold a completion ceremony for the 'Madeul Nongyo Transmission Center' at 11 a.m. on the 7th in front of the transmission center within Madeul Sports Park. The progress of the project and the improved facilities of the transmission center will be introduced to residents.
Along with the completion ceremony, a rice harvesting experience event will also be held. Through Madeul Nongyo, the only farmers' song passed down in Seoul, growing youth will have the opportunity to directly experience fading traditional culture and agricultural life. About 120 students from grades 3 to 5 at Sangcheon Elementary School will participate, learning the process of harvesting rice and experiencing the value of traditional farmers' songs firsthand in a meaningful event.
