Park Gang-su, the mayor of Mapo District, always tears up when he thinks of his mother. Perhaps because he lost his mother at the young age of a middle school second grader, he sheds tears whenever his mother is mentioned.
This mayor, elected in the 8th term of the civilian government, launched the nation’s first filial piety project called the ‘Filial Piety Meal Table.’
This project is recognized as a representative senior welfare program that caused a significant impact, to the extent that President Yoon Seok-yeol expressed hope for its expansion to local governments nationwide.
Mapo District provides seniors aged 75 and older with daily nutritious lunches along with health checks for diabetes, blood pressure, and legal and tax consultations. Additionally, it operates a one-stop integrated care service called the ‘Resident Participation Filial Piety Meal Table,’ which includes welfare checks to prevent solitary deaths, earning high praise for significantly improving senior welfare.
This year, Mapo District operates one side dish factory and 45 filial piety meal sites, providing daily lunches to 2,000 seniors. By next year, it plans to provide lunch to 4,000 seniors annually.
In recognition of these efforts, Mayor Park received the ‘Senior Welfare Award’ at the 28th Senior Citizens’ Day ceremony held by the Korea Senior Citizens Association on October 2, Senior Citizens’ Day.
The event, held at the Grand Hall of the aT Center in Seocho District, proceeded with the reading of the senior citizens’ pledge and charter, presidential congratulatory remarks, commendations for meritorious persons, and the presentation of the Senior Welfare Award.
The Senior Welfare Award is selected directly by the Korea Senior Citizens Association (President Kim Ho-il) for local government heads who have contributed to the improvement of senior welfare. Mayor Park Gang-su was awarded for his innovative welfare policies aimed at senior care and eliminating blind spots since taking office in the 8th term of the civilian government.
In particular, the so-called Mapo District ‘Filial Piety Series Policies’?including the ‘Filial Piety Boarding Senior Center’ for housing stability of elderly living alone, the filial culture education program ‘Filial Piety School,’ and the senior-priority civil service counter ‘Filial Piety Counter’?played a major role in the recommendation by the Korea Senior Citizens Association Mapo Branch (Branch Chief Hwang Han-gyu) that transformed Mapo District into a ‘Senior Happiness City’ and contributed significantly to the award.
