Ajou University Radio Wave Research Center Opens... "Start of Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Technology Research"
Broadband Mobile Communication Service Technology Development Planned
The Ajou University Radio Research Center is set to begin full-scale research to develop core technologies for 'low Earth orbit satellite communication.'
On the 24th, the Ajou University Radio Research Center held an opening ceremony at the Woncheon Hall of Ajou University. The ceremony was attended by Han Ho, Vice President of Ajou University, Kim Jaehyun, Director of the Radio Research Center, Ryu Jemyung, Director of the Network Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, and others.
The Radio Research Center is a research center established at universities by the Ministry of Science and ICT to develop core technologies in various radio and satellite fields such as intelligent radar, radio energy applications, and low Earth orbit satellite communication. Currently, 15 centers, including Ajou University, are in operation. This year, Ajou University was selected as a Radio Research Center and will receive up to 4.7 billion KRW in funding until 2031. Chungnam National University and Pohang University of Science and Technology will participate as joint research institutions.
The Ajou University Radio Research Center has set a goal to develop low Earth orbit satellite communication technology necessary to provide uninterrupted real-time, broadband 6G mobile communication services across the Korean Peninsula, and to manufacture a CubeSat capable of demonstrating this technology. Low Earth orbit satellites orbit at the closest distance to Earth, which significantly reduces communication signal delay time compared to satellites at higher altitudes, making them suitable for communication satellites. Additionally, the Ajou University Radio Research Center plans to develop 6G low Earth orbit satellite NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) standard technology and core technologies for uninterrupted broadband mobile communication services.
