Honoring Former Incheon Mayor Choi Gi-seon's Achievements... Honorary Road Designated in Songdo
Incheon City announced on the 11th that it has designated an honorary road name, "Choi Giseon-ro," for a section (580m) within the Academy area of Songdo International City to commemorate the achievements of the late Choi Giseon, the first elected mayor.
Honorary road names are not used as actual addresses but can be designated by local government heads for five years, considering the social contributions, public interest, and symbolism of figures related to the local community.
The city awarded the honorary road name to honor former Mayor Choi’s achievements, including establishing the Incheon Free Economic Zone plan and laying the foundation for the development of Incheon National University.
The day before, a commemorative ceremony for the honorary road designation was held near "Choi Giseon-ro" at Incheon National University Songdo Campus, attended by Hwang Hyojin, Incheon City Deputy Mayor for Global City Administration, the late mayor’s bereaved family and memorial members, local members of the National Assembly, and officials from the city council and city education office.
Deputy Mayor Hwang said, "Former Mayor Choi played a crucial role in the development of Songdo International City and the national Incheon National University located there. The path he envisioned will now serve as an important foundation connecting Incheon to the world and making Incheon an international city."
Meanwhile, Incheon City plans to designate honorary roads at nine locations this year, including "Jaewoe Dongpo-cheong-ro" along a 1.3 km section of Incheon Tower-daero in Yeonsu-gu to commemorate the Overseas Koreans and Foreigners Office launched in June last year, and "Major Yoon Youngha-gil," a 500m section of Dokbae-ro in Yeonsu-gu, to honor the late Major Yoon Youngha who died in the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong.
Last year, honorary road names were given to three locations, including "Ryu Hyunjin Street" in Dong-gu and "UNESCO Lifelong Learning Road" in Yeonsu-gu.
