"Musk's Potential Participation in Regulatory Reform Committee in Trump's Second Term"
WP Report... "Potential Conflict of Interest"
Donald Trump, the former U.S. president and Republican presidential candidate, is reportedly considering the establishment of a new organization responsible for cutting wasteful government spending and eliminating regulations. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, is said to be interested in participating in this body.
On the 2nd (local time), the U.S. daily The Washington Post (WP) reported that the Trump campaign is considering the creation of a so-called 'Government Efficiency Commission' if elected to office.
This commission would be tasked with reducing financial expenditures on wasteful budget programs while eliminating unnecessary regulations.
Earlier, former President Trump mentioned the possibility of appointing Musk as a government advisor last month, saying that Musk "wants to be involved in removing some of the 'oil' (inefficiencies) within the government." He added, "He runs a big company and does everything, but he cannot be in the government cabinet," and "Instead, he can consult with the nation and provide you with very good ideas."
CEO Musk also expressed on the 20th of last month via X (formerly Twitter), the social networking service he owns, that "I am willing to serve."
However, concerns have been raised that if Musk participates in a government body during a potential Trump administration, conflicts of interest could arise between his role as a businessman advancing electric vehicle and space ventures and his position as a government advisor. Since he would be subject to government oversight while also engaging in large-scale transactions with the government, there are worries that Musk might try to influence policy decisions in ways favorable to his businesses. In fact, Tesla currently benefits from government electric vehicle tax credits under the Joe Biden administration while also facing pressure due to the government's pro-union policies.
Meanwhile, former President Trump is reportedly considering involving not only CEO Musk but also Fred Smith, former CEO of FedEx, and Robert Nardelli, former CEO of Home Depot, in the commission.

WP analyzed, "Some critics argue that this effort by former President Trump may amount to a symbolic attempt to restrain government spending," but added, "If the commission, including CEO Musk, identifies ways to cut spending, it could help divert attention from Trump’s plans to increase the fiscal deficit while also solidifying their political alliances."
