Nakdong River Basin Unmyeon Dam Enters 'Attention' Stage for Drought... "Will Strengthen Management"
Entry into 'Interest' as of 23:00 on the 17th
The Ministry of Environment announced on the 19th that it will strengthen management as Unmun Dam (Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongbuk), a major water source in the Nakdong River basin including Daegu Metropolitan City and Cheongdo-gun, has entered the drought 'interest' stage.
According to the Ministry of Environment, Unmun Dam, a major water source in the Nakdong River basin, entered the drought interest stage as of 11 p.m. on the 17th. The precipitation in the Unmun Dam watershed this year (from January 1 to 7 a.m. on August 19) was 687.3 mm, which is 82% of the average (839.2 mm). In particular, since the end of the monsoon on the 28th of last month (after July 28), only 6.4 mm of rainfall (4% compared to the average of 171.0 mm) has been recorded, resulting in only a small flow at a 200-year frequency level flowing into Unmun Dam.
The Ministry of Environment expects that if only a small flow at a 200-year frequency continues to flow in, Unmun Dam will be upgraded to the drought 'caution' stage by mid-September.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment reports that other dams under its jurisdiction, besides Unmun Dam, currently have inflows at the 200-year frequency level and are expected to additionally enter the drought interest stage around September. The Ministry plans to strengthen water management for each dam according to the drought stage entered.

Park Jae-hyun, Director of Water Management Policy at the Ministry of Environment, stated, "Since we are still in the flood season (June 21 to September 20), we will do our best to respond to typhoons affecting our country this week and prevent flood damage. At the same time, we will ensure that there are no problems in water supply through dam drought management in case there is no heavy rain."
