At a press conference with reporters from the Gyeonggi Provincial Government held on the 14th at Dodamso in Suwon (the former governor's residence), Governor Kim introduced, "A few years ago, Brad Glosserman published a book titled Peak Japan, which analyzes Japan's current situation and future prospects. The book points out that Japan's economy has reached its peak, and its people have become complacent, intoxicated by success, and resistant to change."
He added, "The Korean translation of this book includes a preface warning that 'while reading this book might feel bitter, discerning readers should realize that Korea could face the same fate as Japan.'"
He continued, "Recently, some people in Japan have been pointing out the concept of Peak Korea," adding, "They warn about Korea's striking similarities to Japan and highlight serious demographic issues."
Governor Kim analyzed, however, "(The book) also presents positive aspects about Korea," noting, "Unlike Japan, Korea has a tradition of a vocal and proactive public that aggressively demands crisis responses from the government."
Nonetheless, he expressed concern, saying, "Observing the current government's (Yoon Suk-yeol administration) response and looking at Korean society and politics today, I worry that the positive aspects mentioned by the author are now fading or being threatened."
In particular, he criticized, "The government is indifferent to the people's voices. It does not listen to them. It is even failing to recognize reality," and asserted, "There are serious concerns about whether South Korea's political arena, society, and governance are functioning proactively."
Furthermore, he advised, "We must now seriously consider Peak Korea and prepare countermeasures and responses."
