Samgyetang and Frozen Chicken 'K-Dakgogi' Export Path Opens... Wide Open from EU to UK
Following the European Union (EU), it has become possible to export Korean chicken products such as Samgyetang and frozen chicken to the United Kingdom.
On the 13th, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced that the export route for heat-processed chicken products such as Samgyetang, frozen chicken, and dumplings to the UK has been opened.
In December last year, Korea concluded sanitary and quarantine negotiations on the export of heat-processed chicken products with the EU. Subsequently, in January this year, Korea inquired about the possibility of exports to the UK, which withdrew from the EU in January 2020, and in May received guidance from the UK on sanitary and quarantine requirements.
The government utilized the international strategic partnership established through the Korea-UK summit and the Korea-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) improvement negotiations last year, closely cooperating with the Korean Embassy in the UK and the British Embassy in Korea, maintaining continuous communication with the UK government. At the same time, it thoroughly reviewed the UK’s sanitary and quarantine requirements for importing heat-processed chicken products and completed all procedures for export, including preparing export certificate forms.
In addition, to enable the industry to export quickly, the government provided prior information on the UK’s food industry and import regulation trends. Export companies are preparing to export various heat-processed chicken products such as frozen chicken and dumplings following the export of Samgyetang to the EU in May. Since the UK is the second-largest economy in Europe, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs expects the spread of K-Food to accelerate further.
Song Mi-ryeong, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, “As the export territory of K-Food expands, the horizon of ‘gastronomic diplomacy’ is broadening.” She added, “Starting with Samgyetang, which was first exported to the EU in May this year, we will actively support online and offline promotions, discovery of new buyers, entry into distribution stores, and expansion of overseas joint logistics centers so that K-Food and Korean food culture, including frozen chicken, chicken dumplings, and chicken ham, can be widely disseminated.”

Going forward, the government plans to continue supporting exports by promoting gastronomic diplomacy and regulatory diplomacy to pioneer new export markets, widely publicizing the excellence of Korea’s domestic food safety management system overseas, and helping more domestic food companies enter broader global markets to achieve higher export performance.
