Yang Bu-nam, a current member of the National Assembly, was elected as the chairman of the Democratic Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Party Committee.
On the 4th, at the Democratic Party’s Gwangju regional primary held at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center in Seo-gu, Gwangju, following the 8·18 National Party Members Convention to elect the next party leadership, Yang Bu-nam recorded 65.85% of the vote in the election for the Gwangju City Party Committee chairman.

원본보기 아이콘This election was conducted through ARS voting by party members from the 1st to the 3rd and online voting by national delegates from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the day of the election.
The total electorate consisted of 101,897 party members and 670 national delegates, of whom 32,179 party members and 627 delegates participated in the voting.
Candidate Kang won 164 delegate votes (31.12%) and 11,098 party member votes (34.39%), resulting in a final 34.15% of the vote.
Candidate Yang received 364 delegate votes (68.88%) and 20,181 party member votes (65.41%), securing a final 65.85%, comfortably surpassing candidate Kang.
The final vote percentage was calculated by reflecting 10% from national delegates and 90% from party members.
In his policy speech, candidate Yang began by saying, "I stand here to illuminate the future of Gwangju and to realize the ideology and values of the Democratic Party."
He continued, "I will create a party committee centered on party members and open an era of party member sovereignty," emphasizing, "I will gather and reflect party members’ opinions on issues related to the party committee, establish a party office, and publish a party newsletter to enhance the presence of party members."
He also stated, "I will establish a political school to cultivate the political knowledge and capabilities of those who dream of politics, aiming to create a second and third DJ (the late President Kim Dae-jung)," and added, "I will set up a policy research institute within the party committee to lay the groundwork for the Democratic Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Party Committee to lead the development of Gwangju."
Furthermore, he pledged, "I will fight to the end against this administration to revive the livelihoods plunged into crisis and to win the next local elections."
