"Men Need at Least 100 Million Won for Wedding Funds... Women Need 60 Million Won"
Average Desired Marriage Budget for Spouses: 83.4 Million KRW
A survey revealed that the desired marriage fund is about 60 million KRW for men and 100 million KRW for women.
According to a recent "2024 Marriage Perception Survey" conducted by the matchmaking company Gayoun targeting 500 unmarried men and women aged 25 to 39 (250 men and 250 women each), the average hoped-for budget that prospective spouses wish to have prepared was approximately 83.4 million KRW.
The marriage fund that women hope men to have before marriage was 103 million KRW, while the amount men hope women to have was 63.8 million KRW. The average for those in their 20s was 81 million KRW, and for those in their 30s, about 85.7 million KRW. Although the difference by age was not significant, the amount desired by men was about 1.6 times higher than that of women.
Among those with a smaller marriage budget, 40.8% responded that they would "proceed with the wedding within the saved budget." This was followed by "postpone the wedding until saving more (26.8%)," "cover the shortfall with a loan (16.2%)," "receive support from both sets of parents (11.2%)," and "give up on marriage altogether (3.8%)."

Choi Myung-ok, a couple manager at Gayoun, said, "Unlike the traditional culture where the man buys the house and the woman prepares the wedding items, nowadays it is common for both to share expenses together. This is partly due to the increased burden of housing costs, but changes in values emphasizing individual choice and happiness have also influenced this shift." She added, "There is no absolute standard for a marriage budget. We recommend setting the burden ratio and priorities according to each person's situation. There is no need to conform to others' standards."
