Gyeonggi-do Urges Livestock Farmers to Prevent Heatwave Damage
Gyeonggi Province has urged livestock farmers to pay special attention to the management of livestock barns and animals to prevent heatwave damage, including distributing guidelines for actions during heatwaves.
According to the guidelines distributed by Gyeonggi Province, to prevent livestock deaths during prolonged heatwaves, water should be sprayed on the roof, and sufficient ventilation, cooling fans, and mist sprinklers should be operated to lower the temperature inside and outside the barns.
Additionally, fresh water should be supplied sufficiently, and high-quality feed should be given frequently to prevent feed deterioration. Especially for young livestock and chickens vulnerable to heat, immune boosters such as vitamins should be consistently provided to alleviate heat stress.
In particular, for pigsties and laying hen houses, power outages due to increased electricity usage in summer can cause livestock deaths or electrical fires. Therefore, electricity usage should match the farm size, and if electricity consumption is expected to exceed limits, usage should be adjusted immediately.
Furthermore, the condition of electrical wire insulation inside and outside the barns, proper operation of leakage circuit breakers, installation of emergency generators, and regular electrical safety inspections should be conducted to prevent accidents caused by electricity.
For managing livestock diseases during high temperatures, maintaining barn cleanliness, regular disinfection, strict restriction of entry by outsiders and vehicles, pre-vaccination, removal of weeds and puddles around barns, and installation of insect screens for pest control are necessary.
Gyeonggi Province is making every effort to minimize heatwave damage by expanding support for immune boosters for heatwave-vulnerable poultry and pig farming from 25 tons last year to 55 tons this year, and providing 5.7 billion KRW for facilities and equipment such as mist sprinklers, water purification systems, ventilation fans, heating and cooling devices, and heat-reflective paint by livestock type.

Lee Kang-young, Director of the Livestock Animal Welfare Bureau of Gyeonggi Province, emphasized, "July and August often see heatwaves following heavy rain, so detailed management of barns and livestock is necessary. Livestock farmers should enroll in livestock disaster insurance for quick damage recovery and business restoration in case of damage."
