KOITA Holds Regulatory Innovation Meeting to Revitalize the SMR Industry
The Korea Industrial Technology Association (KOITA) announced on the 11th that it held the 'Private R&D Council Regulatory Innovation Meeting' to revitalize the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) industry.
The meeting, held at the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Central Research Institute conference room, was organized to gather industry opinions on the regulatory system for the SMR industry. Sixteen SMR sector participating companies, including DL E&C, GS Construction, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Daewoo Construction, Doosan Enerbility, Mirae Wadojeon, Samhong Machinery, SeAH Besteel, Susan E&S, Standard Testing Laboratory, Woori Technology, Woojin, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Korea Electric Power Technology, Hanwha Ocean, and Hyundai Construction, along with about 30 officials from the Ministry of Science and ICT and other related parties, attended the meeting.
The participating companies presented various industry policy demands, such as △establishing standards for hydrogen production facilities linked to nuclear power generation, △establishing licensing and regulatory systems for marine nuclear power, and △promoting government-led demonstration reactor construction. They also stated that they will continuously derive R&D demands through the Private R&D Council.
Lee Sang-won, head of the SMR division of the Private R&D Council and director at Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, said, "The domestic licensing and regulatory system for the SMR sector is still insufficient compared to advanced countries," adding, "Continuous government interest and support are very important for the early commercialization of SMRs."
