Byeoksa Traditional Dance Preservation Society, Master Jeong Jaeman 10th Anniversary Memorial Performance
On the 14th at the National Gugak Center Yeaakdang
The Byeoksa Traditional Dance Preservation Society announced on the 3rd that it will hold a memorial performance for the late Master Jeong Jaeman on the 10th anniversary of his passing, titled "Like Carrying a Great Taesan on One's Back..." on the 14th at 7:30 PM at the National Gugak Center's Yeaakdang.
About 70 dancers will take the stage to present splendid group performances of "Taepyeongmu," as well as works such as "Sky Path... Floating Flowers," a modernized version of the Jindo Ssikimgut, "Salpuri," "Cheongpungmyeongwol," and "Seungmu."
Master Jeong Jaeman was the holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 27 for Seungmu. In 1971, he became a disciple of Han Youngsuk, the grand dame of Korean traditional dance, and learned Byeoksa dance. Thereafter, Master Jeong established Byeoksa-style dances such as Seungmu, Salpuri dance, Taepyeongmu, Sanjo, Gwangdaemu, Hunryeongmu, and Heoteunsalpuri, nurturing numerous disciples and striving for the succession and development of dance.
The Byeoksa Traditional Dance Preservation Society was founded by Master Jeong's disciples, and currently, Professor Cha Sujeong of Sookmyung Women's University serves as its president.
The title of the performance reflects the master's teaching: "Dance with weight, as if carrying a great Taesan mountain on your back... as if tying a heavy rock to your feet," aiming to recall this guidance.
