Uiryeong County Conducts 'Asbestos Health Impact Survey' for Residents in Areas Vulnerable to Asbestos Exposure
Free Health Checkups by Asbestos Environmental Health Center of Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital at Garye Village Welfare Center on the 29th
Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam will conduct an 'Asbestos Health Impact Survey' for residents in areas suspected of asbestos exposure at the Garye Village Welfare Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the 29th.
This survey, carried out by the Asbestos Environmental Health Center at Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital, targets individuals who have lived for more than five years within a 2 km radius of the former asbestos factory (1986~1989, 195-5 Garye-ri, Garye-myeon), as well as those working in other industries. It is also offered free of charge to those who have lived for more than ten years in houses with old slate roofs, and to former workers and families from industries vulnerable to asbestos exposure.
Eligible participants who wish to undergo the examination should bring their ID and visit the Garye Village Welfare Center.
The health checkup includes a medical examination, chest X-ray (for asbestos-related disease diagnosis), and an asbestos exposure history survey. If there are suspected findings of asbestos-related disease, Yangsan Pusan National University Hospital will conduct further detailed examinations such as chest CT and lung function tests to determine whether the participant is a suspected asbestos-related disease patient.
If, after review by the Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute, the individual is finally recognized as an asbestos victim, they may receive support such as medical care benefits and living allowances through the asbestos damage relief system.
An official from the county urged residents to participate in the asbestos health impact survey, emphasizing that it will help identify potential asbestos victims in advance and provide relief from asbestos-related damages.
