The Emergence of Shin Lee Jae-myung Faction Leading 'Lee Jae-myung's Re-election'

Common Goal of Hardline Party Members: President Lee's Election
"Strengthening Party Cohesion Centered on Lee Shin-myeong"
The power landscape within the Democratic Party of Korea is rapidly being reorganized around the 'Shinmyeong faction (New Lee Jae-myung faction).' Until now, the pinnacle of the pro-Lee faction that followed Representative Lee was the 'Group of Seven,' led by Representative Jeong Seong-ho. This group included Representatives Jeong Seong-ho, Kim Byung-wook, Kim Young-jin, Moon Jin-seok, and former Representatives Lim Jong-seong and Kim Nam-guk. However, starting with the April 10 general election, new pro-Lee figures have taken key positions, signaling the beginning of change. These individuals are expected to take the forefront of the 'Lee Jae-myung 2nd term' leadership team, which will challenge for re-election at the party convention this August.
The Shinmyeong faction is generally characterized by its strong party members. They share a common goal of judging the Yoon Seok-youl administration and making Representative Lee the next president. Key figures of the Shinmyeong faction include Kim Woo-young, the party representative's political coordination chief; Hwang Myung-sun, the deputy head of organizational affairs; and Park Gyun-taek, the chairman of the legal committee. Their commonality is that they belong to the 'Democratic Party National Innovation Council,' a strong external organization. The Innovation Council is the largest organization within the Democratic Party, with over 40 current lawmakers.
Representative Kim is a former standing representative of the Innovation Council. Representative Hwang is a former mayor of Nonsan during the 5th local government term. He served as the party spokesperson during the presidential election and earned recognition for his administrative skills, calling himself the 'Little Lee Jae-myung.' Representative Park, a former prosecutor, was one of the 'Five of Daejang-dong' who handled the defense in the Lee Jae-myung Daejang-dong case. He is currently a key figure defending Representative Lee's 'judicial risk' on the front lines.
The Growing Shinmyeong Faction Will Strengthen the Lee Jae-myung Regime
If the Shinmyeong faction takes the forefront of the party, it is expected that Representative Lee will grip the party more tightly. This is because cracks in the pro-Lee regime were sensed during a series of events such as the 22nd National Assembly Speaker candidate election in the first half and the rejection of the 'Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act.' Candidate Chu Mi-ae was eliminated, and five opposition votes defected during the special prosecutor bill vote. This confirmed opposition to what was thought to be a solid Lee Jae-myung regime. Professor Shin Yul of Myongji University's Department of Political Science and Diplomacy analyzed in a phone call, "Especially the opposition defection votes during the special prosecutor vote must have been quite embarrassing for Representative Lee," adding, "He must have calculated that he needs to take stronger control of the party."
However, opinions differ on how to utilize the Shinmyeong faction to increase this grip. Political commentator Park Sang-byeong said, "Once the Lee Jae-myung 2nd term regime begins, there is practically no force in either the ruling or opposition parties that can put a brake on Representative Lee. The Shinmyeong faction will solve (all risks) on the front lines." Professor Shin Yul said, "Since it was confirmed that there are opposing forces within the party in recent votes, Representative Lee will feel the limitations of relying entirely on a few specific pro-Lee figures."

The role of the original pro-Lee 'Group of Seven' as the red team is also a point to watch. Representatives Jeong Seong-ho and Kim Young-jin recently publicly expressed concerns about amending the party constitution and regulations to strengthen party membership rights. Representative Kim openly told Representative Lee, "If you only eat sugar, your teeth will all rot." The fact that critical voices against the Lee Jae-myung one-man regime came from core members of the Group of Seven is seen as a potential seed for future pro-Lee factional splits. On the other hand, some opinions suggest that this too may be a form of 'promissory sparring' to strengthen Representative Lee's one-man regime.
