Professor Jo Byunghwi of Sangmyung University Selected for NRF Excellent Early-Career Research Project
First Attempt to Apply Carbon Nanomaterial Penetration Bonding in Cement Composites
Professor Jo Byunghwi of the Department of Construction Systems Engineering at Sangmyung University was selected for the 2024 Korea Research Foundation Excellent Early-Career Research Project for his study on "Improving the Durability of Aged Concrete Road Structures Using Nanotechnology and Incorporating Smart Functions."
View original imageProfessor Byunghwi Jo of the Department of Construction Systems Engineering at Sangmyung University announced on the 20th that he has been selected for the 2024 Korea Research Foundation Excellent New Research Project for his study on "Improving the Durability of Aged Concrete Road Structures and Equipping Smart Functions Using Nanotechnology."
Through this research, Professor Jo made the first attempt to apply carbon nanomaterial penetration bonding using strontium ions to cement composites, presenting a new direction in the maintenance and management of aged concrete road facilities. Additionally, he developed core technology to equip smart functions to aged concrete, which is expected to reduce economic and social costs, improve safety, and contribute to carbon reduction.
With this research project selection, Professor Byunghwi Jo will receive a total research fund of 950 million KRW over the next five years.

Professor Byunghwi Jo stated, "The research team conducting this project is dedicated to playing a leading role in the field of domestic road infrastructure maintenance," and added, "We will strive for performance enhancement and the implementation of various smart functions through continuous follow-up research."
