Yeosu City, Nationwide First Establishment of a Clean Dried Seafood Auction Market
2nd Floor Above Ground, Equipped with Modern Facilities and Cheongcheong Hygiene System?
Yeosu City (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong), a representative fisheries city in the Republic of Korea, has built a ‘Clean Seafood Auction Market’ equipped with hygienic and modern facilities at Gukdong Fishing Port.
The ‘Clean Seafood Auction Market’ was constructed with a total investment of 7 billion KRW, including 2.4 billion KRW from the central government, 400 million KRW from the provincial government, 1.4 billion KRW from the city, and 2.8 billion KRW from Yeosu Fisheries Cooperative, from 2022 to 2024. The facility is a two-story building with a total area of 2,558㎡, featuring an auction market, auction hall, packaging room, and other convenience facilities. The auction market is scheduled to open in early July.
Notably, it is the nation’s first clean auction market exclusively for dried seafood, built as a closed facility to maintain appropriate temperature and humidity levels, which dried seafood is particularly vulnerable to. A clean hygiene system has been introduced to ensure that all stages?receiving, auctioning, storage, and delivery?are handled and managed hygienically.
Additionally, a viewing corridor has been established on the second floor of the clean auction market, allowing visitors to observe the entire dried seafood auction process. This is expected to enhance Yeosu’s status as a leader in fisheries development and attract tourists.
On the morning of the 18th, Yeosu City held a completion ceremony at the Clean Seafood Auction Market attended by about 300 people, including Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong, City Council Chairman Kim Young-gyu, city and provincial council members, the head of Yeosu Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, the chief of Yeosu Police Station, the chief of Yeosu Coast Guard, and fishermen.
