TBS Union: "Management's Dysfunctional Operation... Mass Layoffs Announced"
Management "Minimum Wage" vs Labor "Must Guarantee Living Wage"
TBS, facing an existential crisis due to the cessation of Seoul city support, is embroiled in internal conflict over wages. The labor union demands a "guaranteed 2.39 million won," while management insists on guaranteeing the minimum wage.
The TBS Labor Union and the Korean Federation of Mediaworkers' Unions (Media Union) TBS branch stated in a joint press release on the 14th, "We officially demand the resignation of Acting CEO Lee Seong-gu, who has shown ignorance and dysfunctional management behavior." The union and management met earlier on the 12th at the Labor-Management Emergency Countermeasures Committee but only confirmed their differences over wages.
The two major unions proposed adjusting wages within the limit of guaranteeing the Seoul-type living wage of 2.39 million won, with the remaining amount replaced by unpaid leave. However, management proposed guaranteeing the minimum wage but paying the unpaid amount "only if profits exceed 120% of fixed operating costs."
On the 13th, management announced a "Plan to Implement Emergency Work System" internally, stating that those who reject the management's wage proposal would be processed as resignations. The two major unions criticized this, saying, "Nearly 100 members have already left the company through voluntary retirement, yet management has announced another mass layoff under the guise of overcoming the management crisis."
