Binatek Signs Partnership with German MTU to Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell Systems
MTU Aero Engines, a leading German aircraft engine manufacturer, announced on the 10th that it has selected Vinatek as a partner for the development of its self-developed aviation system at the 'ILA Berlin Air Show' held from the 4th to the 6th.
MTU is a company that supplies engines to aircraft manufacturers worldwide. In order to align with the global trend of decarbonization, carbon emissions in the transportation sector play a very important role. Among them, the aviation sector emits more than 700 million tons of carbon annually. There is a need to prepare for decarbonization through eco-friendly energy transition.
Furthermore, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)'s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), airlines that exceed the carbon emission standards must purchase emission allowances to offset them. Although participation is currently voluntary, mandatory participation will be required from 2027. As a result, the clock for eco-friendly transition to reduce carbon emissions is accelerating for all airlines and aircraft manufacturing companies.
To align with global trends, MTU has promoted the aircraft electric powertrain development project FFC (Flying Fuel Cell). It will begin developing a 600KW-class hydrogen fuel cell system for aircraft by 2027.
Through this partnership, Vinatek is expected to solidify its leading position in the emerging market by developing membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) optimized for MTU's FFC project, securing leading technology and customer references not only for buildings, vehicles, and ships but also for aircraft MEAs.
