Gochang-gun Conducts Survey to Gather Opinions on Changing County Symbols
Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, announced on the 4th that it will conduct a survey among residents to gather their opinions on whether to change the county symbol bird, the "pigeon," which has been designated as the county bird.
The county designated the pigeon as the county bird because it is a gentle bird that has lived amicably with people, symbolizing the residents' love for their hometown and gentleness, as well as peace and harmony among the residents.
However, in 2009, the Ministry of Environment designated pigeons as harmful wildlife due to the damage they cause to human life, aircraft, and crops, and other local governments have also been excluding pigeons from their county birds.
Within the county, opinions have been raised that a review is necessary to change the county bird pigeon in line with changing times and administrative changes, and reflecting this, a survey on changing the county bird will be conducted to gather residents' opinions.
This survey will collect residents' opinions on the recognition of the symbol, understanding of the meaning of the county bird, the significance of the county bird as a symbol, whether to maintain or abolish the county bird, and alternative county birds.
The survey will be conducted online and offline until the 20th, and anyone among the residents, public officials, related organizations, and groups can participate.
Those wishing to participate online can do so by accessing the Gochang-gun Office website, and if online participation is difficult, it is also possible to visit each eup/myeon office and fill out the survey form provided there.
Lee Young-yoon, Director of Planning and Budget Office of Gochang-gun, said, "We hope for active participation from residents so that opinions from various social groups can be reflected."
