Kim Minsu, AI and Big Data Management Leader at CJ Logistics, emphasized this during a panel discussion at the '2024 Asia Future Enterprise Forum' held on the 22nd at Lotte Hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul. He explained, "Logistics companies operate through multi-layered processes and an ecosystem of people from various roles, so optimization and orchestration are most important. The logistics company that transports the most and earns the highest profits is ultimately the one that best utilizes optimization technology."
He stressed that in the domestic logistics market, which has diverse demands, optimization using AI and data is essential for survival. Leader Kim said, "Individual customers want various services such as dawn delivery, next-day delivery, and same-day delivery, while corporate clients from vastly different sectors seek integrated logistics services tailored to their industries. To create a service level that satisfies all customers, we must fully mobilize customer data and our technological capabilities."
It has also become essential to adapt to future societal changes. With a declining and aging population, continuous optimization is crucial to maintain the work efficiency of existing personnel. Leader Kim explained, "As truck drivers age, risks inevitably increase. CJ Logistics’ pilot operation of fully autonomous truck services on highways using AI and the use of various robots inside logistics warehouses are in the same context."
In fact, CJ Logistics partnered with autonomous driving startup Mars Auto to begin a pilot project in March. A large 11-ton truck operates a 218 km trunk route six times a week from CJ Logistics’ Incheon Terminal Center to the Okcheon Hub Terminal. Inside the logistics warehouse, robots equipped with AI deep learning technology assess the volume of boxes and the amount that can be lifted at once, finding and executing the optimal work sequence.

Jang Byungtak, director of the AI Research Institute at Seoul National University (professor in the Department of Computer Science), who chaired the panel discussion, said, "AI has been widely used before to analyze and judge various matters, but today's AI is different. We have entered the era of 'generative AI,' which judges and discriminates based on data rather than algorithms." He added, "Going forward, actively utilizing 'action AI' that directly performs physical tasks, as in the case of CJ Logistics, will bring business innovation and corporate competitiveness."
