Last year, Russia also intensified offensives in battlegrounds such as Bakhmut ahead of Victory Day. On May 8, 1948, the Allied forces including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and the Soviet Union (the predecessor of Russia) accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, one of the Axis powers that started World War II. Due to time zone differences, Russia commemorates Victory Day on May 9, one day later.
