For this reason, states where the Democratic Party is dominant are often called Blue Cities or Blue States. Conversely, the Republican Party's color is red, and states where the Republican Party is dominant are called Red Cities or Red States. Fox News reported on the 9th (local time) that there is an analysis pointing to the Democratic Party as the cause of the increase in vehicle thefts, which exceeded 1 million cases for two consecutive years last year in the U.S.
Conservative-leaning Fox News cited a report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), stating, "More than 1 million vehicles were stolen in the U.S. last year, which is part of a nationwide trend of increasing car thefts." According to the study, Washington DC and Maryland ranked first in the nation for the number of vehicle thefts in 2023, with increases of 64% and 63% respectively compared to the previous year. In Washington DC, there were 1,149 theft incidents per 100,000 people, which is more than three times the national average. Vehicle thefts in Maryland have also surged in recent years, with a 108% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.
According to NICB's research, the states with the highest increases in vehicle theft were Connecticut (33%), Nevada (18%), and Massachusetts (16%). An NICB official said, "The high number of theft incidents in places like Maryland and Washington DC is likely due to a lack of enforcement in prosecuting vehicle theft." Fox News particularly reported that "law enforcement officials blame bail reform laws in Blue Cities and states (where the Democratic Party is strong) as the cause of the crime increase, saying these laws embolden criminals." Bail reform laws are implemented in places controlled by the Democratic Party, including New York State. These laws eliminate cash bail and minimize detention until trial, and there is analysis suggesting that recidivism rates have increased. Fox News also pointed out that the used car market is another factor encouraging theft, noting that used car prices have risen by 30% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

As theft incidents surged, some cities such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, Richmond, and Scranton have distributed free wheel locks to prevent criminals. NICB reported that certain models are more likely to be stolen. Nationwide, the most frequently reported stolen vehicles were the Hyundai Elantra (domestically known as Avante) and Sonata, followed by the Kia Optima and Chevrolet Silverado.
