Suncheon Songgwangsa Sacheonwangmun Designated as Treasure
Recognized for Artistic, Academic, and Historical Value
Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that the Cultural Heritage Administration designated the "Suncheon Songgwangsa Sacheonwangmun" as a Treasure on the 2nd.
The "Suncheon Songgwangsa Sacheonwangmun" is a Dapo-style building with a gable roof, measuring three kan in width and three kan in depth. It was constructed in a natural-friendly location, forming a beautiful landscape centered around Sinpyeongcheon, which flows around the temple, along with Uhwaru Pavilion above the Hongye Bridge.
Although the exact record of the original construction is unknown, it has been confirmed through the Sacheonwangmun reconstruction ridge beam inscription and the ridge beam inscription found during the dismantling and repair of Sacheonwangmun in 2004 that it was reconstructed in 1612. It is a building that survived the great fire of Songgwangsa in 1951, making its construction date clear and embodying historical significance.
Inside Sacheonwangmun, octagonal cross-sectioned simgoju (internal pillars) were erected to structurally reinforce the main beam and to delineate the area of the Sacheonwang statues, reflecting regional characteristics aimed at expressing ornamental formality. This has been highly recognized for its artistic, academic, and historical value.
