Although the exact record of the original construction is unknown, it has been confirmed through the Sacheonwangmun reconstruction ridge beam inscription and the ridge beam inscription found during the dismantling and repair of Sacheonwangmun in 2004 that it was reconstructed in 1612. It is a building that survived the great fire of Songgwangsa in 1951, making its construction date clear and embodying historical significance.

Inside Sacheonwangmun, octagonal cross-sectioned simgoju (internal pillars) were erected to structurally reinforce the main beam and to delineate the area of the Sacheonwang statues, reflecting regional characteristics aimed at expressing ornamental formality. This has been highly recognized for its artistic, academic, and historical value.

A city official stated, "Sacheonwangmun has well preserved its location and form since the early 17th-century reconstruction and continues the lineage of the construction expansion of Cheonwangmun related to Buddhist monk Buhyuseonsa, making it a cultural heritage of profound significance."
