Hyundai Motor Group Sweeps 66 North America and Europe Car of the Year Awards Over 10 Years
Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 2nd that it has won 66 awards at major Car of the Year ceremonies over the past decade.
This tally includes awards from six ceremonies, including the three major global Car of the Year awards: the World Car Awards, North American Car of the Year, and European Car of the Year, as well as those in the UK, Germany, and Canada. Out of a total of 274 awards, Hyundai Motor Group took nearly a quarter. The Volkswagen Group, which received the second most, won 33 awards.
By brand, Hyundai Motor won 28 awards, and Kia followed closely with 27, ranking first and second respectively. Mazda ranked third with 19 awards, and Volkswagen was fourth with 17. The premium brand Genesis received 11 awards, with every model currently on sale having won at least once. It shares the 10th place jointly with BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz.

Earlier, Kia’s large electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) EV9 was named World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle of the Year at last month’s World Car Awards. Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq 5 received the award for Performance Car of the Year. Starting with Kia’s SUV Telluride in 2020, Hyundai Motor’s Ioniq 5 in 2022, and the following year’s Ioniq 6, the group has won awards four times in the past five years, including three consecutive years recently.
This is the highest level among global automotive groups over the past decade. Jaguar Land Rover won twice, while Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Geely-Volvo, and Volkswagen Group each won once.
Hyundai Motor’s first dedicated electric vehicle, the Ioniq 5 (including the high-performance model), has won 10 awards across six Car of the Year ceremonies in the past 10 years. It is the most awarded single model. More than half of Hyundai Motor’s total 28 awards were won by the dedicated electric vehicle brand Ioniq. Kia also won 10 out of its 27 awards with dedicated electric vehicles.
The company explained that this reflects recognition of the excellence of the E-GMP platform developed exclusively for electric vehicles. Its modularity and standardization allow development across various vehicle segments, and it has received high marks for crash safety and interior space. The fast charging speed and the ease of using the vehicle battery’s electricity are also cited as reasons for the positive evaluations.
