Redevelopment and Revitalization of 11 Zones Around Incheon-daero... Equivalent to 170 Soccer Fields
Incheon City is seeking regeneration plans for the area surrounding the former Gyeongin Expressway section (currently Incheon-daero), where general road conversion construction is underway.
On the 25th, the city announced plans to commission a project to establish redevelopment and revitalization measures for 11 district unit planning zones around Incheon-daero. The project is scheduled to start in June and be completed by May 2026.
The 11 zones, announced in December 2020, cover a direct impact area of Incheon-daero from Yonghyeon-dong, Michuhol-gu to Gajeong-dong, Seo-gu (within 50 meters of the roadside), totaling 1.22 million square meters. This is equivalent to about 170 soccer fields (7,140㎡ each).
In this project, the city will diagnose management and operational issues in the 11 zones to develop improvement plans, and through simulations, establish landscape planning and identify key development spaces.
The Gyeongin Expressway, connecting Seoul and Incheon, was included in the 'Second Five-Year Economic Development Plan' and opened in December 1968 with a total length of 32 km and six lanes (three lanes each way). The surrounding area was developed through a land readjustment project divided into seven sections by 1977.
The Gyeongin Expressway played a key role as a core road supporting domestic industrial development and exports, but for 50 years, high soundproof walls and concrete retaining walls have divided residents' living areas east and west. Additionally, environmental damage such as traffic, noise, and dust scattering, along with severe slumification of the surrounding area, has accelerated, making it urgent to create conditions for urban regeneration.
The surrounding area, divided into small parcels, also faces difficulties in applying development methods due to irregularly shaped lots, lack of infrastructure such as roads and parking lots, vehicle access issues for buildings adjacent to Incheon-daero, and urban aging.
