Sungjae Im "I Like Innisbrook Resort"
Challenging for First Season Win at Valspar Championship
Tied 4th at Innisbrook Resort in 2019
Breaking Two-Month Slump Without Top 10 Finish GO
Im Sung-jae has headed to a place filled with good memories.
From the 21st (local time) for four days, he will compete in the PGA Tour Valspar Championship (total prize money $8.4 million) held at the Innisbrook Resort Copperhead Course (par 71, 7,340 yards) near Palm Harbor, Tampa, Florida, USA. Im Sung-jae is recalling 2019, when he showed his potential by finishing tied for 4th place. This tournament marks his first appearance in three years since 2021.
Im Sung-jae has been somewhat sluggish this year. Since finishing tied for 5th at the PGA Tour season opener, The Sentry, in January, he has not placed within the top 10 for over two months. His best result in eight tournaments after the opener was tied for 18th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The only time he finished within the top 20 since the opener was at that event. Nevertheless, he has consistently made the cut and accumulated points. He is currently ranked 37th in the FedEx Cup standings and 35th in the world rankings.
Im Sung-jae’s strength lies in his precise iron shots. The Copperhead Course favors players who can execute accurate shots. Especially the last three holes, 16, 17, and 18, are notoriously known as the “Snake Pit.” Im Sung-jae’s nickname is “Iron Man.” His “piercing iron shots” make him a player to watch in this tournament.
This is a regular tournament held after two consecutive premium events, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship. Many top-tier players are absent. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (USA) and No. 2 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) are not participating. World No. 5 Xander Schauffele (USA) and No. 8 Brian Harman (USA) are the favorites to win. Both players tied for 2nd place at The Players Championship.

Burns is the two-time defending champion of this tournament, having won in 2012 and 2022. Last year’s winner Taylor Moore (USA) aims to defend his title. Kim Sung-hyun and Lee Kyung-hoon, who have yet to achieve notable results this year, also dream of a comeback.
