Preparation for Pumped Storage Power Plant Construction, Utilizing Community Communication Spaces

Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, and Korea East-West Power Co., Ltd. held the opening ceremony of the ‘Gokseong Pumped Storage Power Plant Construction Promotion Office’ on March 20. About 30 officials, including Lee Sang-cheol, the governor of Gokseong-gun, Yoon Young-gyu, chairman of the Gokseong County Council, and Lee Young-chan, vice president of Korea East-West Power, attended the plaque unveiling ceremony.

The ‘Gokseong Pumped Storage Power Plant Construction Promotion Office’ was opened near the Train Village Traditional Market, a busy area and the center of the local commercial district. It will serve as a communication channel for resident-oriented activities such as gathering local residents’ opinions and promoting the pumped storage power plant.

Gokseong-gun plans to accelerate development, including administrative support and permits for the project site, to complete the project by 2036 in accordance with the government’s basic power supply and demand plan. In particular, it will make every effort to promote various support projects through continuous communication and consultation with residents of the areas expected to be submerged.

The Gokseong Pumped Storage Power Plant is expected to contribute to stabilizing the domestic power grid by responding to the variability and system characteristics of renewable energy, while securing an eco-friendly energy source to address climate change.

Governor Lee Sang-cheol said, “As a result of the unity of all residents with patriotism and a commitment to the development of the county administration, we succeeded in attracting the pumped storage power plant, a national project worth 1.4 trillion won, the largest in Gokseong-gun’s history, last December.” He added, “Starting with the opening of the Construction Promotion Office, we will do our best to make the Gokseong Pumped Storage Power Plant coexist with the region through job creation and linking with the tourism belt.”
