US Court Denies Trump's Request to Postpone $100 Billion Defamation Compensation
Court: "Failed to Prove Claim of Irreparable Damage"
Former U.S. President Donald Trump's request to delay payment of a defamation compensation amounting to approximately 100 billion won was denied. On the 7th (local time), major foreign media reported that the federal court rejected Trump's request to postpone the enforcement of a compensation order of about 100 billion won imposed for defamation related to a sexual assault victim from 28 years ago.
On the same day, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan of the New York Federal District Court denied Trump's request to delay the enforcement of the compensation payment until a decision is made on whether to proceed with a retrial of the verdict. On January 26 of this year, a jury at the Southern District of New York ruled that Trump must pay $83.3 million (approximately 110 billion won) in damages in a defamation lawsuit filed by fashion columnist E. Jean Carroll against Trump.
Trump expressed his intention to appeal, but to proceed, he must post a portion of the fine within 30 days of the finalization of the verdict. Trump's side claimed the verdict itself was invalid and requested a retrial, asking to delay enforcement of the verdict until the retrial decision is made. However, Judge Kaplan ruled that since 25 days had passed since the verdict, the request to delay enforcement could not be accepted, and Trump failed to prove that even if the bond were posted, he would suffer "irreparable harm." Following the decision, Trump’s presidential campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated that Trump "acted timely to prevent the enforcement of an absurd verdict" and added, "We will continue to pursue this lawsuit and prove the truth."
