Strong Player Analysis at Orlando Bayhill Club & Lodge
McIlroy, Fitzpatrick, Im Sungjae: API Powerhouses
There is a tournament favored by players on the PGA Tour.
The majors such as the Masters, the US Open, the PGA Championship, and The Open. They also consider it an honor to participate in tournaments hosted by long-standing traditions and golf legends. One of the must-attend tournaments for many players is the PGA Tour Arnold Palmer Invitational (API). This year, it kicked off on the 7th (local time) at Bay Hill Club & Lodge (par 72, 7,466 yards) in Orlando, Florida.
This tournament was "promoted" to a signature event starting this year. The total prize money is $20 million (approximately 26.7 billion KRW), with double the prize money and FedEx Cup points compared to regular tournaments. Except for two players who left for LIV Golf, Jon Rahm (Spain) and Tyrrell Hatton (England), all players ranked within the top 20 in the world rankings gathered. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (USA), No. 2 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland), and No. 4 Viktor Hovland (Norway) participated. The American golf media Golfweek recently selected the "Best 10 Players" with the best results at Bay Hill Club & Lodge over the past five years.
McIlroy won this tournament in 2018. His performance over the past five years has also been outstanding: tied 2nd in 2023, tied 13th in 2022, tied 10th in 2021, tied 5th in 2020, and tied 6th in 2019. He made the top 10 four times, competing in the race for the championship. Last year, he narrowly lost by one stroke to Kurt Kitayama (USA). McIlroy is a player who performs better on difficult courses. His start this year has been somewhat sluggish: tied 66th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, tied 24th at the Genesis Invitational, and tied 21st at the Cognizant Classic.
Matt Fitzpatrick (England) is also a strong contender at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Including his runner-up finish in 2019, he has placed within the top 10 four times. Fitzpatrick mainly competed on the European stage, accumulating nine wins on the European Tour. On the PGA Tour, he has two wins, including the 2022 US Open. He completed his local adaptation at the Cognizant Classic, which ended last week in Florida.
Im Sung-jae is a strong competitor who has finished in the top 3 twice at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
View original imageIm Sung-jae also showed strength on this course. He finished tied 3rd in 2019 and 3rd in 2020, posting good results. In the past five years, he has never fallen outside the 21st place. Im has played in seven tournaments this season, but his tied 5th place at the season opener, The Sentry, is his only top 10 finish. He was cut twice. He is aiming to break out of his slump at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, his "promised land."
World No. 1 Scheffler has participated in the Arnold Palmer Invitational three times in the past five years. He lifted the winner's trophy in 2022. Last year, he finished tied 4th, and in 2020, tied 15th. Scheffler has entered the top 10 four times in five tournaments this year. He has shown a clear upward trend, finishing within the top 10 in three consecutive recent tournaments. He is a strong favorite to win this year.
