R&A Winner Participation Age Reduced from 60 to 55
New Rule Applies This Year, Previous Champions Eligible
Asian Tour Money Leader Oglutri Also Qualifies for the First Time
The 'oldest major' The Open is imposing an age limit on past champions' participation.
The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A), the organizer of The Open, announced on the 6th (local time) that "the age limit for past champions to participate will be lowered from the current 60 to 55." This change will take effect from the 152nd tournament, held from July 18 to 21 at Royal Troon in Scotland.
Previous champions are not significantly affected. Phil Mickelson (USA), the 2013 champion, will turn 54 this year but can participate until age 60. Also, John Daly (USA), the 1995 champion who turns 58 this year, can compete until age 60.

The R&A decided to grant participation opportunities to top players in the money rankings of the Japan, Asian, Australian, and Sunshine Tours. Accordingly, Andy Ogletree (USA), who topped the Asian Tour money rankings last year, will compete in The Open this year. Ogletree, who won the 2019 US Amateur Championship, turned professional and joined LIV Golf in 2022.
