Naver Self-Regulation Committee Discusses Improvements to Terms of Service and Dispute Resolution Organization
Naver announced on the 6th that it held the 4th regular meeting of the 'Naver User Protection and Self-Regulation Committee' and discussed improvements to the Terms of Service and dispute resolution organization.
The regular meeting was attended by all members of the Self-Regulation Committee, including Kwon Heon-yeong, professor at Korea University Graduate School of Information Security and chairman of the Naver Self-Regulation Committee, as well as Naver lawyer Choo Ji-won, Commerce Partnership & Operations leader Kim Seong-gyu, CS & RM leader Han Mi-ra, and Policy Strategy General Manager Son Ji-yoon.
At the meeting, lawyer Choo Ji-won and leader Kim Seong-gyu explained the current status of Naver's Terms of Service revisions to the committee. Previously, in May last year, the private platform self-regulation organization’s Gap-Eul Subcommittee proposed that sellers be informed of essential details such as fees and payment settlement cycles in the terms to foster a fair trade environment in the open market sector. They also requested prior notification to sellers regarding contract termination, changes, and service restrictions or suspensions. Accordingly, Naver revised the terms in October last year to include prior notification concerning service restrictions, suspensions, and contract termination.
The Naver Self-Regulation Committee expressed opinions that, to minimize consumer damage, seller contract termination, changes, and service restriction or suspension measures should be carried out more promptly, and that the role of the Naver Dispute Resolution Center should be expanded, with unresolved dispute cases shared with the committee to devise solutions. Additionally, it was suggested to provide more detailed information about excellent sellers so that consumers can trust sellers on Naver Smart Store.
Naver plans to establish guidelines with the committee, including actively taking temporary measures within the current law to promptly restrict or suspend services and terminate contracts for sellers violating the terms, as recommended by the committee.
