Assemblyman So Byeong-cheol Declares Non-Candidacy for April 10 General Election
Fair and Transparent Candidate Selection, Call for Restoring Trust
So Byeong-cheol, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Jeonnam Suncheon Gwangyang Gokseong Gurye Gap), announced on the 26th that he will not run in the April 10 general election.
At a National Assembly press conference, So said, "I have had no choice but to spend sleepless nights every day due to the current reality that goes against morality and reason," and added, "After much deliberation, I decided to be the one to lay everything down and raise a voice crying out in the wilderness."
So also stated, "Many citizens who support the Democratic Party are disappointed and watching coldly amid the division and confrontation within the party," and emphasized, "Please restore trust through a fair and transparent nomination process that fully reflects the will of the sovereign people. True reform must begin with a resolute decision like 'eupchammasok' (sacrificing a part for the whole) to innovate."
He further said, "I can boldly say that I have achieved more than anyone else to revive people’s livelihoods and promote balanced development in Honam and Suncheon, and I take pride in having fulfilled my duties as a local constituency lawmaker."

So, a former prosecutor, served as head of the 1st and 2nd Prosecutor’s Divisions at the Ministry of Justice and as Director of the Planning and Coordination Office before retiring. After returning to his hometown and working as a distinguished professor at Suncheon National University, he was recruited by the Democratic Party ahead of the 2020 general election, received a strategic nomination, and was elected.
