People Power Party's Five Incumbents Including Jeong Woo-taek and Lee Jong-bae Advance to Finals... Rep. Lee Tae-gyu Faces Defeat (Update)
Yangcheon-gu Gap and Gwangju-si Eul to Hold Primary Election
Jung Young-hwan "Incumbent Won Despite 35% Deduction"
On the 25th, the People Power Party announced the results of the first primaries held in a total of 19 districts, including Dongdaemun-gu Gap in Seoul. In Yangcheon-gu Gap in Seoul and Gwangju-si Eul in Gyeonggi Province, no candidate received a majority of votes, so a runoff election will be held. The overall dominance of incumbent lawmakers in the constituencies was confirmed.
Jung Young-hwan, the People Power Party's nomination management committee chairman, announced the results of the first round of primaries at the party headquarters that day. In Seoul, Kim Young-woo was selected as the final candidate in Dongdaemun-gu Gap, Lee Jong-cheol in Seongbuk-gu Gap, Lee Sang-gyu in Seongbuk-gu Eul, Oh Kyung-hoon in Yangcheon-gu Eul, and Kang Sung-man in Geumcheon-gu. However, in the Yangcheon-gu Gap constituency, preliminary candidates Gu Ja-ryong and Assemblyman Cho Soo-jin will proceed to a runoff. The runoff will be held if no candidate receives a majority of votes.
In Incheon, Shin Jae-kyung was selected in Namdong-gu Eul, and Yoo Je-hong in Bupyeong-gu Gap. In Gyeonggi Province, Lee Hyung-seop won in Uijeongbu-si Eul, and Kim Seon-kyo in Yeoju-si Yangpyeong-gun. Assemblyman Lee Tae-gyu, who challenged in Yeoju-si Yangpyeong-gun, suffered defeat in the primary. In Gwangju-si Eul, preliminary candidates Jo Eok-dong and Hwang Myung-joo will face a runoff.
In Chungbuk, Jung Woo-taek, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, won in Cheongju-si Sangdang-gu; Assemblyman Lee Jong-bae in Chungju-si; Assemblyman Eom Tae-young in Jecheon-si Dan-yong-gun; Assemblyman Park Deok-heum in Boeun-gun, Okcheon-gun, Yeongdong-gun, and Goesan-gun; and Assemblyman Kyung Dae-soo in Jeungpyeong-gun, Jincheon-gun, and Eumseong-gun. In Chungnam, Assemblyman Jang Dong-hyuk won in Boryeong-si Seocheon-gun, and Jeon Man-kwon, a preliminary candidate, was selected in Asan-si Eul. In Jeju, candidate Go Gi-cheol won the primary in Seogwipo-si.
In this primary, incumbent lawmakers of the People Power Party generally won. It is known that some incumbents won despite lower evaluations and penalties for three consecutive terms. Chairman Jung said, "I evaluate that the incumbents did well or that the competing candidates were not well known in terms of name recognition," and added, "Although the results are like this, if you look closely, the process was conducted fairly." He also said, "Among those who passed today, some won despite receiving a 35% deduction," and added, "I believe the candidates have the best competitiveness."
