Residents of Yongsin-dong, Dongdaemun-gu Angry as Ventilation Shafts Expand from GTX-C Line to B Line...
Avoidance Facility Cluster Yodugongwon... Waste Treatment Facility, Following GTX-C Ventilation Shaft, Now B Line Too
15 Professional Organizations Lead 'Ventilation Shaft Installation Opposition Headquarters' Launch Ceremony and Press Conference on 21st
Residents of Yongsin-dong in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) are reaching the peak of their dissatisfaction.
This is because, in addition to the already operating waste disposal facility, the ‘Dongdaemun Environmental Resource Center’ within Yongdu Neighborhood Park (hereinafter Yongdu Park), news has emerged that ventilation shafts for the Dongbuk Line, GTX-C Line, and now the GTX-B Line will be installed.
Ventilation shafts for the Dongbuk Line and GTX-C Line are planned to be installed in Yongdu Park. In particular, for the Dongbuk Line, which is currently under active construction, a station (Stop 102, Majang-dong Livestock Market) will be installed in Seongdong-gu, while only a ventilation shaft will be installed in Dongdaemun-gu.
The Korea Rail Network Authority is pushing to change the location of the GTX-B Line ventilation shaft from ‘Kkotjae Park in Seongdong-gu’ to ‘Yongdu Park in Dongdaemun-gu’ due to collective complaints from Seongdong-gu residents opposing the installation of ventilation shafts, citing the absence of a settlement station in Seongdong-gu for the GTX-B Line.
In response, the ‘Ventilation Shaft Installation Opposition Movement Headquarters,’ formed mainly by 15 functional organizations including the Yongsin-dong Residents’ Autonomous Committee, held an inauguration ceremony on the 21st and held a press conference in front of the district office square.
Kim So-ja, who has long served as the head of the Dongdaemun-gu Environmental Monitoring Team, said, “Since the completion of the Environmental Resource Center in 2010, hundreds of garbage trucks have been coming in and out of Yongdu Park day and night, and residents have endured the nuisance of improperly treated malodorous substances,” adding, “Piling all kinds of undesirable facilities into Yongdu Park is a behavior that thoroughly disregards the residents of Yongsin-dong.”

At the press conference, the Ventilation Shaft Installation Opposition Movement Headquarters (Head: Moon Hong-sik) stated, “Before labeling opposition to the ventilation shaft installation as local selfishness, we ask for understanding of the residents’ position who have tolerated the operation of waste disposal facilities from a magnanimous perspective,” and added, “We can only think that this is going too far. How can all the unwanted facilities be placed in Yongdu Park? If the will of Dongdaemun-gu residents is not reflected, we will strongly block the ongoing Dongbuk Line construction with all means using the power of the residents, and we will also block the GTX-B and C section constructions to the end.”
