Rural Development Administration Jeonnam Selects 26 Districts for Drainage Improvement Projects This Year
The Jeonnam Regional Headquarters of the Korea Rural Community Corporation (Director Cho Young-ho) announced on the 20th that 26 districts have been selected this year for drainage improvement projects to alleviate farming difficulties caused by frequent flooding.
The drainage improvement projects selected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs total 154 districts, of which 11 out of 58 newly initiated districts were selected in Jeonnam.

Among the 96 districts under basic investigation, 15 districts were included, giving momentum to the modernization of drainage facilities.
The Jeonnam Headquarters stated that this achievement was made through continuous proposals on the necessity and feasibility of local drainage improvement projects together with Jeonnam Province, local members of the National Assembly belonging to the Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs and Oceans Committee, and local residents.
Additionally, the headquarters plans to thoroughly prepare basic investigations and other measures until the districts selected for basic investigation this year are chosen as newly initiated districts next year.
The drainage improvement project is aimed at preventing farmland flooding damage by constructing or refurbishing disaster prevention facilities such as drainage channels and pumping stations on farmland of 50 hectares or more that frequently experience flooding.
When the drainage improvement project is implemented, pumping stations will be installed in low-lying areas where water must be pumped out, drainage gates will be newly installed or expanded in areas where natural drainage from farmland to rivers is possible, and drainage channels will be newly constructed where none exist, facilitating smooth cultivation of other crops.
In particular, on the 18th, a heavy rain advisory was issued for nine cities and counties in Jeonnam, including Boseong and Jangheung, and the Jeonnam Headquarters operated 37 pumping stations to prevent flooding damage in barley and wheat cultivation areas.
Operating pumping stations in February is rare, and with recent heavy rains occurring regardless of season, the need for flood prevention is increasing, so the Jeonnam Headquarters plans to continue efforts to expand drainage improvement projects.
Director Cho Young-ho said, “We are constantly exposed to the risk of flood damage due to recent heavy rains and abnormal weather, increasing the necessity of related facilities. We will strive to accelerate the implementation of drainage improvement projects so that their benefits can reach every corner of rural areas.”
