LG AI Research Institute Joins UNESCO Private Sector Organization
Announces AI Lifecycle Risk Management System
"Enhancing Korea's Leadership in International Ethical Discussions"
LG announced on the 6th that LG AI Research Institute participated as the only domestic company in the UNESCO Global Forum on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethics.
The forum is held over two days starting from the 5th (local time) in Slovenia. It is a venue to discuss the implementation plan of the first international standard, the 'AI Ethics Recommendation.' This year's theme is 'The Changing Landscape of AI Governance.' The forum was attended by ministers in charge of science and technology from 194 UNESCO member countries, the Secretary-General of the European Parliament, the Ethics Director of the Alan Turing Institute, the AI Director of the World Economic Forum, and others.
Kim Yu-cheol, Head of Strategy at LG AI Research Institute, shared experiences in establishing a risk management system for each stage of the AI lifecycle (research·development - utilization - disposal) at the forum. Discussions were held to build close cooperative relationships in the fields of AI ethics and governance with global big tech companies, UNESCO member countries, and international organizations.
In November last year, LG AI Research Institute became the first domestic company to partner with UNESCO to implement and spread AI ethics. In the first half of this year, they plan to develop an 'AI Ethics Education Program for Experts' together with UNESCO. An LG official explained, "We plan to strengthen global AI ethics leadership by participating in international AI ethics activities."
LG AI Research Institute announced at this forum that it joined the private sector AI ethics organization, the 'UNESCO Business Council.' Along with co-chair companies Microsoft and Telef?nica, global companies such as Salesforce and the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) play a role as a platform to promote the implementation of UNESCO AI ethics recommendations and to disseminate best practices in developing and operating AI ethics impact assessment tools.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General, also announced the 'AI Ethics Statement' at the forum's opening event. The statement contains commitments from the private sector, including the Business Council and participating companies in the forum, to create ethical and responsible AI. LG AI Research Institute plans to serve as a focal point to promote leading cases of AI ethics practice to the international community and encourage participation from the domestic AI industry.
LG AI Research Institute recently published the 'AI Ethics Accountability Report.' The report was prepared reflecting the contents of the first international standard unanimously adopted by UNESCO member countries, the 'AI Ethics Recommendation,' as well as the government's announced 'AI Ethics Guidelines' and 'Digital Bill of Rights.' They plan to publish the report annually. In 2022, they announced the 'LG AI Ethics Principles,' including respect for human dignity, fairness, safety, accountability, and transparency.
They also conducted governance enhancement activities. Within the institute, they operate the 'AI Ethics Committee,' 'AI Ethics Secretariat,' 'Red Team,' 'AI Ethics Research and Activity Group,' and 'AI Ethics Working Group.' The Red Team is an organization that identifies errors in AI algorithms and models and system vulnerabilities. They have also engaged in technology research and awareness-raising activities. They are striving to solve challenges in health, environment, and other areas by applying AI.
