Upstage and LG Electronics Join Forces to Develop On-Device AI Laptops and Home Appliances
AI startup Upstage announced on the 6th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LG Electronics for AI business collaboration.
The two companies plan to develop a lightweight language model based on on-device AI and apply it to LG's Gram laptops. On-device AI is a technology that enables AI functions to operate directly on the device without an internet connection.

On-device AI processes information within electronic devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets. It features faster operation speeds and lower power consumption compared to cloud-based AI. It can operate even when the internet connection is unstable or disconnected, allowing AI services to be used anytime and anywhere. Another advantage is that personal information is not leaked externally, addressing security concerns.
Upstage is developing on-device AI for PCs and home appliances using its proprietary model, "Sola." Sola is a pre-trained model consisting of 10.7 billion parameters. Upon its release last month, it ranked first on the global AI platform Hugging Face's large language model (LLM) leaderboard with a performance evaluation score of 74.2. Despite being less than one-tenth the size of OpenAI's GPT-3, it can provide various AI functions, drawing attention as an on-device AI model.
The two companies plan to develop AI functions and additional services applicable to PC products. Utilizing on-device AI, they will develop services that recognize users' voice commands, translate, summarize, search, and recommend documents or web pages. They will also expand cooperation to apply on-device AI to home appliances. This will enable new experiences such as recognizing users' voice commands, searching and recommending content stored within the laptop, and saving and summarizing video conference content as text.
