61.9% of 1,218 General Admission Passers Are from General High Schools
Proportion of General High Schools Hits Highest in 11 Years Since 2014 Academic Year
Meanwhile, Proportion of Autonomous Private High Schools Drops to Lowest in 11 Years at 19.6%
Among the successful applicants of the regular admission at Seoul National University (SNU) this year, approximately 62% were graduates from general high schools, marking the highest rate in the past 11 years.
On the 1st, SNU announced that it selected a total of 1,545 students through the 2024 academic year regular admission. This included 1,218 students through the general admission, 156 through regional balance admission, 84 through opportunity balance (low-income), 83 through opportunity balance (rural), and 4 through opportunity balance (special/North Korea). Among the 1,218 general admission students, 61.9% were from general high schools. This is an increase of 9.2 percentage points from 52.7% last year. According to Jongno Academy, the proportion of general high school successful applicants was the highest in 11 years.
On the other hand, the proportion of successful applicants from autonomous private high schools (Jasago) was recorded as the lowest in 11 years since the first graduates from Jasago started to appear in the 2014 academic year. The share of Jasago was 19.6%. The proportion of Jasago successful applicants has been continuously decreasing: 26.2% in 2021, 25.4% in 2022, 24.7% in 2023, and 19.6% in 2024. Following that were arts and physical education high schools at 6.0%, foreign language high schools at 3.7%, science gifted high schools at 2.3%, GED holders at 2.1%, autonomous public high schools at 1.9%, and science high schools at 1.4%. Jongno Academy explained that the increase in the proportion of general high schools and the decrease in Jasago’s share is due to SNU reflecting school grades in the regular admission starting from the 2023 academic year.

Meanwhile, among the regular admission successful applicants, current high school students accounted for 38.1%, a decrease of 3 percentage points from last year. Repeaters (students retaking the exam once) accounted for 40.4%, up by 0.7 percentage points, and those retaking the exam two or more times accounted for 19.3%, up by 1.7 percentage points. The proportion of female students among both early and regular admission successful applicants was 36.8%, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from last year. Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, said, "Although SNU excluded Science Inquiry II from the required subjects starting from the 2024 academic year, it awarded additional points for it. Repeaters started studying before Science Inquiry II was excluded, and since the standard scores for Science Inquiry II were high this time, they likely had an advantage in the regular admission."
