Governor Lee Cheol-woo of Gyeongbuk Province expressed his condolences and respect on the 1st for the firefighters who tragically died in the line of duty while conducting rescue operations last night, stating, "We will honor them with the highest formality in all areas, including funeral procedures and comforting the bereaved families."
On the same day, Governor Lee convened an emergency meeting with the heads of departments at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office and urged, "Conduct the funeral procedures with the highest formality and respect, including holding a memorial service as the Governor of Gyeongbuk Province to honor the noble sacrifice of the fallen firefighters."
Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo is visiting the fire site in Mungyeong where two firefighters died in the line of duty, receiving a report on the accident circumstances.
View original imageHe further stated, "Do not spare any support, including psychological counseling, for the bereaved families," and added, "Ensure that the funeral procedures fully reflect the wishes of the families."
He also instructed all employees to "fly flags at half-mast and wear mourning ribbons during the funeral period, and work in a solemn atmosphere to commemorate the sacrifice of the deceased," emphasizing the establishment of public service discipline during the mourning period.
The memorial altars will be operated for five days from the 1st to the 5th at four locations: Dongnak Hall at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office, and the fire stations in Mungyeong, Gumi, and Sangju. The memorial service will be held on the 3rd, with the venue to be decided after consultation with the bereaved families.
At around 7:47 p.m. on the 31st of last month, a fire broke out at a meat processing factory in the Shingi 2nd General Industrial Complex in Shingi-dong, Mungyeong City, Gyeongbuk Province, where two firefighters became trapped and died during firefighting efforts. At the time of discovery, the two rescue workers were located about 5 to 7 meters apart, and the fire authorities explained that the search was difficult due to many structures piled on top of the bodies.

The two deceased firefighters were part of a four-person team, including two other team members, conducting rescue operations on the third floor of the building when they were engulfed by flames and became trapped. The fire authorities reported that just before escaping, the flames spread rapidly, and although they tried to evacuate via the stairs, they apparently could not escape in time.
