'Pilot Launch of the "Geunhyeondae Korean Dictionary" Service'
'Joseoneo Sajeon' and 'Keunsajeon' as Digital Resources
On the 1st, the National Institute of the Korean Language, together with Naver and the Korean Language Society, launched a pilot service for the 'Modern and Contemporary Korean Dictionary.' The 'Revised and Enlarged Joseon Language Dictionary (1940)' published during the Japanese colonial period and the 'Large Dictionary (1947~1957)' issued shortly after liberation have been converted into digital data and made publicly available. Director Jang Sowon stated, "We plan to continue converting major past dictionaries into digital data and expand the service."
The Revised and Enlarged Joseon Language Dictionary is an expanded and supplemented version of the 'Joseon Language Dictionary (1938),' known as the first Korean dictionary. It received great acclaim at the time of publication and was widely distributed. The Large Dictionary is the first comprehensive Korean dictionary derived from the unfinished Korean dictionary 'Malmoe,' embodying the nation's aspiration to compile a Korean language dictionary.

Both dictionaries laid the foundation for modern Korean dictionaries but were difficult to access as they existed only as old books. The National Institute of the Korean Language addressed this issue by providing original text images containing the searched terms when a search word is entered. Additionally, users can simultaneously search headwords included in both dictionaries and separately view only the desired types of headwords. An official explained, "Users can freely navigate between the 'Standard Korean Language Dictionary' and 'Urimal Saem,' making it easy to compare the past and present of the Korean language."
