This forum was organized to identify regulatory improvement tasks for fostering the food tech industry and to discuss development plans through collaboration among industry, academia, research, and government, as Pohang City is moving swiftly to secure a leading position in future promising markets.
At the meeting, Professor Kim Yong-an from the Department of Food Tech Convergence at Pohang University of Science and Technology delivered a keynote speech on ‘Development Plans for the Pohang Food Tech Industry,’ and Kim Mi-sook, Director of the Food Industry Division, presented the ‘Plan for Promoting the Creation of the Pohang Food Tech Industry Cluster.’
Following this, under the chairmanship of Vice Mayor Jang Sang-gil of Pohang City, participants engaged in in-depth discussions by sector on cooperation measures to foster the food tech industry.
During the discussion, opinions were expressed on the need to introduce food robots and digital technologies to overcome crises such as labor shortages in the dining industry and high inflation, along with forecasts that home meal replacements and alternative foods will become new avenues for the food industry due to global warming and the increase in single-person households.
There was also a consensus that fostering the food tech industry requires creating an environment, including infrastructure and awareness improvement, so that the food and dining industries can embrace advanced technologies.
Additionally, it was agreed that infrastructure to support food tech startup creation and research should be established, and an ecosystem combining traditional food industries with advanced technologies should be developed.
Vice Mayor Jang Sang-gil stated, “We will do our best to foster the food tech industry by discovering policies with high public impact based on a close cooperative network among related organizations.”
Pohang City plans to actively promote projects that citizens can feel, such as ▲establishing a Food Tech Research Support Center to create R&D startup infrastructure ▲expanding public consensus through education and promotion on food tech ▲building food tech infrastructure for the food industry and spreading digital platforms.
