Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts Special Crackdown on Drunk Sailing During Lunar New Year Holiday
Special Crackdown on All Vessels Including Fishing Boats and Multi-Use Ships
Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) announced on the 30th that it will conduct a special crackdown on drunk navigation during the Lunar New Year holiday to prevent maritime accidents and establish traffic order.
This special crackdown will be carried out for four days from the 9th to the 12th of the Lunar New Year holiday period, following a publicity and guidance period from the 1st to the 8th of next month.
The crackdown targets all vessels operating at sea, including fishing boats, multi-use vessels (oil/ferry boats, passenger ships, fishing boats), water leisure equipment, and cargo ships.
Over the past three years, the number of drunk navigation cases in the jurisdiction of Mokpo Maritime Police was a total of 39, with fishing boats accounting for 29 cases, about 74% of the total, followed by 6 tugboats, 3 leisure equipment, and 1 other vessel.
Those caught for drunk navigation are subject to a blood alcohol concentration of 0.03% or higher according to the Maritime Safety Act, and depending on the concentration, they face penalties ranging from a minimum fine of 5 million KRW to imprisonment from more than 2 years up to 5 years, or fines between 20 million KRW and 30 million KRW.
