"Revealing Korea's uniqueness while evoking universal emotions"
Author Lee Geum-i has been shortlisted for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, a prestigious international children's literature prize. According to the literary community on the 22nd, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) recently announced this year's Andersen Award finalists in the writing category, including Marina Colasanti (Brazil), Heinz Janisch (Austria), Bart Moeyaert (Belgium), Timo Parvela (Finland), Edvard van de Vendel (Netherlands), along with Lee Geum-i.
Lee debuted in 1984 with the short fairy tale "Yeonggu and Heukgu." She has published works including the steady sellers trilogy "You Are Also a Sky Lily," "Sohee's Room," and "Finding the Hidden Path," as well as "Yujin and Yujin," "Aloha, My Mothers," and "There, Am I Not Allowed to Go?" She was also nominated as Korea's candidate for the Andersen Award in 2020. The Korean branch of IBBY explained the reason for re-nominating her as Korea's candidate last February: "After reviewing whether she can reveal Korea's uniqueness while evoking universal emotions and whether she is a writer who develops alongside today's children and youth, we judged that she could easily surpass the high hurdles."

The Andersen Award was established in 1956 to honor Hans Christian Andersen (1805?1875), a Danish fairy tale author. It is awarded every two years to one writer and one illustrator who have contributed to the development of children's literature. Each country's Andersen committee recommends their national representative, and international judges evaluate their achievements to select the winner. This is the first time a Korean author has joined the final candidates in the writing category. Lee Suji, who won in 2022, was in the illustration category. The winner of this year's honor will be announced at the Bologna Children's Book Fair in Italy this April.
