Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has completed the creation of ‘garden-style strip green spaces’ where residents can walk through urban streets and enjoy small gardens and seasonal changes throughout the year.
The ‘garden-style strip green spaces,’ which involve planting trees or flowers in the spaces between street trees along roadsides, not only secure green areas and improve urban aesthetics but also help reduce fine dust and mitigate heat waves. Moreover, they serve as a ‘green safety belt’ that separates sidewalks from roadways, preventing jaywalking and enhancing pedestrian safety.
Accordingly, the district created ‘garden-style strip green spaces’ full of seasonal attractions from April to December last year, moving away from the monotonous and seasonally lacking existing strip green spaces. Additionally, to minimize salt damage caused by winter cold and snow removal operations, ‘blocking screens’ made of rice straw were installed around the strip green spaces.
The target locations include five sections: Dangsan-ro 42-gil, Dangsan-ro, Yeongjung-ro, Yeouidaebang-ro 35ga-gil, and Yeongdeungpo-ro. The total length reaches 1,233 meters, covering an area of approximately 1,600 square meters.
The district planted trees of varying heights such as golden spirea and Korean fir to add greenery, and perennial herbaceous plants and seasonal flowers like daffodils, hydrangeas, and Liriope spicata.
Furthermore, the district created ‘pocket rest areas’ around the strip green spaces so that residents can take a short break while walking or waiting at crosswalks. Through these ‘pocket rest areas,’ the district hopes the strip green spaces will transform from simple green areas into healing and cultural spaces and sanctuaries for residents within the city.
In the future, the district plans to expand strip green spaces connecting neighborhoods and buildings during redevelopment and reconstruction projects to overcome the geographical limitation of having no mountains within the area. It also intends to create green pedestrian streets reflecting unique themes along each roadside to expand urban forests and parks.
