The connection between Jeju and Chungbuk began in December 2022 when Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Province, met Kim Young-hwan, Governor of Chungcheongbuk-do, at Guinsa Temple in Danyang, Chungbuk, and agreed to help neighbors in need while exchanging local specialties.
Since then, in January 2023, the two regions started exchanges by delivering local specialties to underprivileged groups, and this agreement was reached to build a continuous regional cooperation model in line with the government’s local era policy.
Through this business agreement, the two institutions will cooperate on six detailed tasks: ▲promotion and revitalization of sales of representative local agricultural products ▲mutual support for rural jobs between Jeju and Chungbuk ▲mutual cooperation for the development of the cosmetics and beauty industry ▲establishment of a super-regional cooperation system for innovation in the bio-health industry ▲exchange and cooperation for the advancement of welfare policies for the disabled ▲mutual cooperation to activate the Hometown Love Donation System.
Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Province, said, “To move forward into the full-fledged local era, each local government must grow regional competitiveness into national capability through healthy competition and cooperation,” adding, “I hope this agreement will become a solid cornerstone leading the local era of South Korea and advance harmony and cooperation beyond regional boundaries.”
In response, Kim Young-hwan, Governor of Chungcheongbuk-do, said, “I would like to propose a plan to integrate the living population by forming a ‘Sea-Land Alliance’ between Jeju, which has the sea, and Chungcheongbuk-do, the inland center,” and added, “I hope that from today, through cooperation and exchanges in various fields, Jeju and Chungcheongbuk-do will become regions that visit and love each other more.”
Before the signing ceremony, Oh Young-hoon, Governor of Jeju Province, and Kim Young-hwan, Governor of Chungcheongbuk-do, pledged to contribute to each other’s regions through the Hometown Love Donation and to work together to establish the system so that it contributes to local finances.
Meanwhile, after the agreement ceremony, Governor Oh Young-hoon gave a special lecture titled “Looking to the Future in Jeju, Embracing a Shining History” to about 100 Chungcheongbuk-do officials, sharing the spirit of Jeju people and a future blueprint while sharing the value of Jeju.
