Living in a Wandering Community for 6 Years
Decided It Was 'Not Right' and Escaped
Alex Batty, a British teenager who went missing during a family trip to Spain with his mother and grandfather and was found six years later, revealed in a local broadcast interview detailed accounts of what happened over the past six years.
He lived with adults in a spiritual community led by his mother and grandfather, where he was exposed to outside knowledge through books and movies. However, one day he decided to escape on his own, left the community, and safely returned to the remaining family members.

On the 3rd (local time), Alex appeared on the British morning news program "Good Morning Britain" with his grandmother. Having escaped from his mother and grandfather, he currently lives in Manchester, UK, with other family members including his grandmother and uncle. Alex went missing during a family trip to Spain in 2017 when he was 11 years old and was found last month on the 14th in Toulouse, western France. In the interview, he revealed that he had been wandering within the community with his mother and grandfather during the six years he was missing.
The community wandered throughout Europe without a fixed residence, barely earning income through day labor or construction work. Most members were much older than Alex. He recalled the community life as "very boring," saying, "I mostly spent time reading books and watching movies."
Eventually, Alex concluded that "this kind of life was not right." He wanted to go to school and interact with friends like other teenagers. He explained, "(The escape) was not a concrete plan but more of an emotional decision," adding, "When I turned 16, I first told my mother and grandfather that I wanted to go home." Alex's mother strongly opposed his leaving the community. However, his grandfather encouraged him, saying, "Do what you think is best."
Afterwards, Alex left a note for his mother and grandfather and left the community around 7 a.m. one day. He wandered mountain paths for over four days to get to the UK, was found by a French delivery driver, and was able to reunite with his family.
