On the 5th, Yonhap News reported that Mr. Kim Gil-nam (62), who lives in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, discovered a blue peacock while drinking coffee on the rooftop after breakfast the previous day. Mr. Kim said that a large and splendid male peacock with a blue hue was proudly displaying itself in a rooftop garden on the fifth floor of his house.
Mr. Kim said, "In spring, various crops are planted in the garden, so many birds like magpies and sparrows come flying in, but in the 30 years I have lived here, I have never seen such a large and unusual bird." He added, "Since 2024 is the Year of the Blue Dragon, the arrival of a blue peacock makes me think that good things might happen to me, the residents of our building, and Eunpyeong-gu," expressing his joy.
The fire department responded to Mr. Kim's report and captured the peacock around 10:40 a.m. The bird was handed over to the Eunpyeong-gu Office, but its origin has not yet been confirmed. A district official stated, "There are no facilities or zoos breeding peacocks near the discovery site," but added, "We understand that peacocks have appeared in Eunpyeong-gu in the early 2000s." The district office transferred the captured peacock to the Korea Animal Rescue Management Association. The association plans to announce a notice to find the bird’s previous owner or an adopter.
Meanwhile, experts explained that peacocks are not species that undertake long-distance flights but tend to stay close to their habitats and walk around. This is because they belong to the order Galliformes, family Phasianidae, with short and rounded wings unsuitable for long-distance flight. However, it is said they can fly distances ranging from several meters to tens of meters.

Also, although the main habitat of peacocks is in warm climates such as India, their large size and dense feathers give them good thermoregulation abilities, making survival possible even in Korea’s winter environment.
